Former NFL player Mike Williams has died of dental sepsis, authorities said.

 

Florida state officials said the medical examiner’s office has not recorded such a cause of death.

Williams, 36, was working at a construction site when the accident occurred on Aug. 21 and was found to be carrying a “heavy load on his head,” according to a preliminary report.

The cause of death stated in the report was “bacterial sepsis with brain abscess and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to extensive caries and retention of dental roots.”

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is also considered a contributing factor.

Hillsborough County officials said the coroner’s office has not recorded such a cause of death.

The next day, a 911 call was made from her home, referred to only as a “medical call,” to the Hillsborough County Fire Department.

Williams was then taken to the hospital where a CT scan of his head was performed.

The report says the scan revealed a “multifocal intracranial mass with worsening 8mm left-to-right midline shift” and “acute toxic anoxic encephalopathy”.

He was later diagnosed with “acute hypoxic respiratory failure, cardiac arrest and sepsis due to multiple brain abscesses” and admitted to the intensive care unit.

On September 1, Williams suffered a heart attack. He received CPR prior to intubation and sedation.

“Palliative ventilation” was performed in 7 cases with a diagnosis of respiratory failure.Then he died on September 12.

The Bucs selected Williams with the 101st overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft after four years at Syracuse.

Williams made an immediate impact in his first year in Tampa Bay, becoming the first Buccaneer rookie to score in back-to-back games since Carnell Williams in 2005 and setting a franchise record for most touchdowns in a season with 11.
