Michigan football. All three are the winningest programs at the NFL, high school and college levels, respectively, a fact Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh emphasized in his opening remarks at Monday’s news conference.
Michigan (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) defeated Maryland (6-4, 3-4) on Saturday with a chance to become the first football program to reach 1,000 wins at any level.
“This is what I’ve been dreaming about, what I’ve been working towards, to have the opportunity to play in the 11th game of the season and get to 1,000 games,” Harbaugh said.“
We want to thank everyone who has worn a winged helmet, everyone who has contributed, those who have supported their efforts and our current supporters. It is monumental.
It motivates us to find more things to do, to stay on track, to be nimble, nuanced and attentive. Complete the task.
“We are proud of our football team,” he said.Monday wasn’t the first time Harbaugh talked about his next milestones this season.
The 59-year-old played a key role in the success of the program, which began in 1879.
He won 44 games as a player for the Wolverines from 1982-86 and more than 80 as a coach.
But Harbaugh might not get a chance to celebrate his 1,000th win without at least taking the field with his team.
Harbaugh was suspended three games by the Big Ten on Friday for violating the league’s sportsmanship policy.
The NCAA continues to investigate Michigan in connection with a signal-stealing scheme involving former Connor Stallions recruit.
On Monday, he was asked if he could miss the big time.
Harbaugh had a hearing Friday in Ann Arbor that could temporarily limit the Big Ten-imposed suspension.
“Name your emotion, whatever it is. Frustration, anger, happiness.
No matter what happens, I’m just going to go to work,” Harbaugh said. “
I’m looking for something else to do and it clears my mind, clears my soul and often gives me good ideas about what to do and how to do it.
Not every time, but most of the time. When it’s over, you’ve done something.
“Michigan’s winning numbers will be displayed at the factory throughout the season.
Harbaugh said the Oct. 16 program discussed possible ways to commemorate the achievement.
Fifth-year senior quarterback Quinten Johnson said he’s excited to see what the Wolverines come up with on Tuesday.”It’s fun,” he said.
“Profits are counted on the wall. The day I thought would never come, but it did. It’s a testament to Michigan football and all that came before it.
It’s something I know in 40 or 50 years I’ll be proud to be a Wolverine.
When you go into the museum and see all the history and what it means to the history of the program, it’s not just the 1,000th win, it’s something to celebrate.
It must be an event or something that must happen.”It’s safe to say that not all 999 Michigan wins should be treated equally.
Over 100 years ago, the Wolves defeated high school programs and amateur associations multiple times.
But a win over Maryland would keep Michigan’s undefeated season intact until the 2023 regular-season finale against Ohio State.
“This is a huge accomplishment,” UMass graduate Josh Wallace said.
“Michigan is a prestigious program and they talked about that when they hired me here. “
