New England Patriots release quarterback ahead of game against New York Giants – Week 12 – Gridiron Heroics

The New England Patriots will face the New York Giants next Sunday without naming a starting quarterback.

However, that didn’t stop the team from releasing one of its signal-callers on Saturday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots have waived quarterback Will Grier.Grier joined the New England Patriots in mid-September. The Pats released him before their Week 12 game, leaving the team at three quarterbacks.

Will Grier: A college standout who became a factory workerGrier shined during his final two college seasons, throwing 71 touchdowns on 21 picks with the West Virginia Mountaineers.

He capitalized on his success by becoming the 100th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers. Grier played in two games as a rookie, going 28-52 with 228 yards and four picks while leading the Panthers to an 0-2 record.

The former prospect lasted just two more seasons in Carolina and was released in 2021 before playing one more regular season snap.

Grier signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 2022 and bounced between the active roster and practice squad until his release at the end of this year’s preseason.

However, the 28-year-old has played well this preseason, including throwing for 305 yards and scoring twice in the finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.

After a brief stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, Grier joined the Patriots.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports New England Patriots: Question marks at quarterback in 2023The Patriots have struggled mightily at the quarterback position this season, throwing only ten touchdowns and eleven interceptions in ten games.

Former first-round pick Mac Jones is at the center of the trouble, leading head coach Bill Belichick to decline to name a starter in preparation for Sunday’s game.

New England could invite former Western Kentucky sharpshooter Bailey Zappe or rookie Malik Cunningham to start in Week 12. Zappe played well last season, throwing five touchdowns against three picks and leading the Pats to a pair of wins.

Meanwhile, Cunningham played college ball at Louisville but has yet to throw a ball this year. He only threw six passes during the preseason.
