Exciting transfer chase gathers pace as West Ham try to bring 27yo speed demon back to PL
West Ham are trying to bring an absolutely rapid striker back to the Premier League in the January transfer window.
David Moyes has a lot of work to do in January, if he is to guide West Ham to a successful 2023/24 campaign, with the addition of a new striker undoubtedly his number one priority.
With Jarrod Bowen having suffered a knee injury as well, and doubts remaining over Mohammed Kudus’s back problem, the addition of a pacy front-man this winter will be much needed at the London Stadium.
The 27-year-old left Chelsea to rejoin the Bundesliga side in the summer for around £25 million (Sky Sports).
But he seemingly could be set for a return to London in the January transfer window…
West Ham hunting exciting striker signing
According to SPORT BILD (print edition November 22nd, page 29), the Hammers are battling Crystal Palace and Fulham to sign Werner on loan this winter, in a bid to provide him with more playing time with EURO 2024 on the horizon.
The fact that the claim has come from a highly respected German publication lends more credence to the Werner to West Ham rumours.
Since returning to Leipzig, the 27-year-old has bagged 16 goals and seven assists in 53 games (Transfermarkt) – not the most impressive tally.
And his struggles with Chelsea will definitely serve as a warning for the Hammers. However, we all know just how good Werner can be. He possesses absolutely blistering pace and can play anywhere along the front-line.
In his final season with Leipzig before he moved to Stamford Bridge, he bagged 28 goals and eight assists in 34 Bundesliga games, after scoring 16, 13 and 21 goals respectively in the previous three league campaigns (Transfermarkt).
It’s worth noting that with his pace and willingness to run in behind, he should be far more suited to our counter-attacking system than he was to Chelsea’s more possession based playing style.
I think the German striker would be a terrific addition for West Ham this winter, and a loan deal with an option to buy would be the perfect deal for us. Hopefully Moyes manages to get it done.
