New Browns QB Joe Flacco: ‘I can still play’
Deshaun Watson’s play was in question from the start. Then he injured his shoulder. After his return, he played two very good matches. Then an ankle problem, followed by another shoulder problem which landed him in intensive care.
While Watson missed four games, rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson made his first start for the Baltimore Ravens against one of the league’s best defenses. The end result was a 28-3 victory and showed DTR as a fifth-round newcomer.
Also starting was journeyman P.J. Walker, who went 2-1 in his three starts. On some trips he played well, on others he looked terrible.
With Watson now gone for the year, general manager Andrew Berry knew he needed an experienced presence in the QB room. And there was plenty to choose from. He was used before the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and signed to the practice squad on Monday. It is believed that he will be elevated to the main roster once he understands the offense.
Flacco, 38, had his first training session on Wednesday. Earlier, he held a press conference with the media about his new team, which is currently 7-3-0 and would hold the No. 5 seed if the playoffs began today. One of Flacco’s thoughts:
The Browns may or may not depend on Flacco’s assessment of his current playing abilities. DTR played poorly at times against the Steelers, whose offense worked well in the first half before becoming completely unbalanced over the final two quarters. The 10-0 halftime lead turned into a tie. Fortunately, Cleveland retained the ball on its final possession after the defense once again prevented Pittsburgh from gaining first downs and launching another drive.
DTR then orchestrated an offense that would be the envy of many veteran signal-callers as he took the Browns down the field 4-4 on passing plays before putting the team within field goal range. K Dustin Hopkins then drilled the winner. DTR played very well in the game, making his second start and also playing against an excellent defensive unit with a number of backup offensive tackles.
So this could be DTR for the rest of the season. We will see. He is expected to start Sunday against the Denver Broncos and the coaching staff is expected to stick with him until he makes a mistake. Then everyone will see if Flacco takes over and provides the quality depth the team has enjoyed over the years with reliable backups Case Keenum and Jacobi Brissett. OT Dawand Jones will return and the offense moved OG Michael Dunn off IR for quality depth. Meanwhile, OT Geron Christian has played well in his two starts, so the tackle position may not be in as dire a situation as previously thought going forward.
It’s also encouraging that TE David Njoku is having a good year, just as many other receivers not named Amari Cooper have contributed to this offense as of late.
What the signing of Flacco means for the Browns is that they now have a seasoned veteran who has played a lot of games, been to the playoffs, won a Super Bowl, is used to the stress of the game and a defense that can read, and has a calm about him both on and off the pitch.
“I am an experienced man who is participating a lot at this time of the season with a team that is doing well. So I think there’s a lot of different things that I can bring to the table.
Is Flacco here to mentor DTR? Perhaps, and he will definitely become a teacher for young people. But more importantly, Flacco is here to be the starter if that’s what he needs. And if DTR goes to the races, it’s also good for the coaching staff.
DTR is a talented athlete and runner, just like Watson. Flacco is more of a pocket passer who fights for positive yards on flushes, but doesn’t have running plays going for him. Now in his 16th season, he has 368 career carries for 862 yards, including 16 rushing touchdowns and 123 runs converted into first downs.
Flacco, who is 1.80 meters tall and weighs 110 kilos, explains:
“Whatever my role is and wherever it takes me, I will do my best. »
Last year he was with the New York Jets, where he played in five games with four starts. The last game he played was in Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins in a key division game, an 11-6 Dolphins victory. That said, it’s not like Flacco has been out of the game for very long. Yes, he hasn’t played a single snap this year, but Berry brought him to the team after seeing his practice.
Browns fans may remember what Flacco did against them in a 31-30 home loss in Week 2 last year. This was the game in which Cleveland only had to get into the winning formation three times and then kick a short field to take a two-point lead, which would have left the Jets with just over 20 seconds to go. counter. Instead, Nick Chubb scored a touchdown and New York mounted a big comeback with a successful onside kick to win.
In the game, Flacco was 26-44 for 307 yards with four touchdown passes, the last two with 1:55 left. Games with at least two passing touchdowns.” Those three are among the eight NFL records he holds.
“I’m focused on the day. As long as I can do it, whatever happens and whatever my role is, then I will do my best.”
