$118M Quarterback Recommended to Request Release and Join Browns

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

The Cleveland Browns added Joe Flacco on Monday as the best of the limited options to fill out the QB room, although scenarios in which the team drafts a more usable player remain viable.

Former Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan appeared on FanDuel’s Up & Adams Show on Monday, November 20 and suggested quarterback Ryan Tannehill ask the franchise for his release and accept a new opportunity on the Cleveland track.

“The Browns would be the best place for him,” Lewan said.

“There are tools, they have a good running game, they run a similar offense. So I think it would be a good solution for him.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
Tannehill suffered a serious ankle sprain earlier this season that ultimately cost him his starting spot in Nashville.

Rookie Will Levis threw for four touchdowns against the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 29, and Tannehill has been a reserve ever since.

The Titans are 3-7 and in last place in the AFC South.

Tannehill is 35 years old and is likely interested in not only playing at some point this season, but also participating in meaningful games.

Tennessee can no longer trade the QB as the Oct. 31 NFL deadline for such deals has passed.

Tannehill is playing the final season of his four-year, $118 million contract and will be a free agent in March.

At this point, the Titans have nothing to gain from playing Tannehill and can no longer acquire him in return, meaning the franchise is likely more susceptible to the QB demanding to release him.

Browns still face big questions at QB Down Stretch Run

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Cleveland probably makes more sense as a destination for Tannehill than anywhere else in the league.

Deshaun Watson underwent successful shoulder surgery Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season, although the organization expects him to return healthy in 2024.

Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over the Browns’ offense on Sunday, leading the team to a 13-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Thompson-Robinson completed 4 of 4 passes during an eight-play, 48-yard drive that set up a game-winning field goal by kicker Dustin Hopkins.

Beyond that push, though, Thompson-Robinson looked as inexperienced as you’d expect from a QB making the second start of his NFL career.

He finished the game 24 of 43 for 165 yards and one interception.

The only other game the rookie started came in Week 4 – a huge home loss to the Baltimore Ravens in which he threw three interceptions.

PJ Walker surpassed Thompson-Robinson after that outing, but struggled to produce despite Cleveland winning two of the three games in which he played the most snaps.

The Browns demoted Walker and turned to Thompson-Robinson after it was announced last week that Watson had suffered a season-ending injury.

Flacco is a former Super Bowl MVP, but he’s also 38 years old and hasn’t posted a regular season winning record since 2017, when the Ravens finished the year 9-7.

Flacco spent the last three seasons as a backup with the New York Jets. He started nine games during that span and posted a 1-8 record.

If Thompson-Robinson continues to struggle, regress or get injured, there’s a good chance Flacco will make it through.

If he also fails for some reason, the Browns could look to alternative options like Tannehill, assuming he can get out of his contract in Tennessee.
