Football fans all make the same point after Everton deducted 10 points

Upon the news that Everton have been deducted ten points by the Premier League, football fans have been quick to point out the Manchester City-shaped elephant in the room.

Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton have been deducted ten points by the Premier League after breaching financial fair play rules.

Initial reports suggested that the Toffees could be deducted as many as 12 points, but the independent commission looking into the case eventually decided on docking them ten.

The outcome leaves Everton 19th in the Premier League table, somehow still above Burnley, but the result has moved Sean Dyche’s side back into the relegation zone.

The commission’s decision has been criticised by some as overly harsh, while football fans have been quick to point out that the final decision on the 115 charges brought against Man City has yet to been made.

The current Premier League and European champions have denied any wrongdoing and are fighting the legal battle vehemently, with no final decision yet on whether or not Man City breached financial rules.

Many have bemoaned the hypocrisy of the Premier League for handing out such a large punishment to Everton when Man City remain unpunished.

Previously speaking about the charges against City, Guardiola stated: “I am the spokesman for this club and every few days I’m here [in a press conference].

Every single word I said in all my press conferences, even if people don’t believe me, is because I truly, truly believe it. Why did I defend the club and the people? It’s because I work with them.

“When they are accused of something I ask them ‘tell me about that’, they explain and I believe them. I said to them ‘if you lie to me, the day after I am not here’. I will be out and I will not be your friend anymore.”

Chelsea could also be facing a points deduction after deals conducted by Roman Abramovich during his time as owner that financially benefitted the Blues but were not published in the club’s accounts.

If Everton’s punishment is the standard, then Man City and Chelsea could be in significant trouble, although their financial muscle could help them escape retribution.

Everton became only the third side in Premier League history to receive a points deduction, following in the footsteps of Portsmouth and Middlesbrough who were handed nine and three point deductions respectively.
