Just Now: Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur believes Liverpool have a player that is better than Sergio Aguero.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has voted Alexis Mac Allister the third best Argentine to ever play English football.

Mac Allister became the sixth Argentinian to play for Liverpool after signing this summer from Brighton for a paltry £35million.

And according to Romero, the Reds bought a great player. Asked by Amazon Prime Video Sport on TikTok about his best compatriots who have played in England, the Spurs man decided to offer some interesting advice.

Atnumber five, Romero kept his Tottenham cap and chose legendary midfielder Ossie Ardiles. Then, and somewhat surprisingly, the central defender chose Manchester City icon Sergio Aguero.

Aguero may be the fifth highest scorer of all time in the Premier League, but according to Romero, he is no match for Mac Allister, who sits in third place.

We’re not arguing, but that’s high praise. The 25-year-old then chose Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez as his runner-up before crowning Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez as king.

Rounding out a somewhat bizarre list, Romero praises Martinez as “by far the best defender in the world.” Excuse me? Romero chooses Mac AllisterWe won’t go too far into a ranking that places former or current Liverpool players ahead of Man City legends.

But that’s quite an interpretation of Romero.Let’s just say we love Mac Allister as much as the next guy.

The 24-year-old has fitted in perfectly at Liverpool so far and we can’t wait to see where his legacy takes him at Anfield. But to claim that he is close to Agüero’s level is – in a footballing sense – simply false.

And besides, it’s difficult to take seriously a list in which Martinez is “by far” the best defender in the world. ‘The Butcher’ has been a decent asset for United since arriving last summer, but he is nowhere near as good as Romero suggests.

Instead, we would like to highlight another player who should have been present in this conversation: Javier Mascherano.

The former Liverpool midfielder was one of the best players in his time at Anfield and should be right up there. But in our opinion, Aguero is the undisputed number one here.

However, let’s hope that Macca can make his position on this list more justified over time.
