Aaron Ramsdale applauded David Raya for his save during the Arsenal v Spurs match

Jamie Carragher questioned authenticity of Ramsdale’s applause for Raya save

Ramsdale’s father defended his son’s reaction and took to social media to vilify Carragher

Aaron Ramsdale’s father has branded Jamie Carragher a disgrace over some of his comments about the goalkeeper after Arsenal’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

He called out the former Liverpool defender on Twitter after Sky Sports shared footage of his comments about Ramsdale during his battle with David Raya for the top spot at the Emirates.

The former Brentford player joined the Gunners in the summer and immediately put the Englishman in contention, sitting on the bench thanks to some good performances.

The match ended 2-2, but both goalkeepers put in a solid performance, making some incredible saves for their respective teams as Ramsdale looked on from the sidelines.

Raya was particularly impressive and although his teammate seemed to be enthusiastically cheering him on, Carragher wasn’t convinced it was real.

What did Jamie Carragher say about Aaron Ramsdale?
There was one moment in particular during the game where it looked like Spurs rookie Brennan Johnson might get on the scoresheet.

The former Nottingham Forest star collected the ball in the penalty area and looked to have an open goal in front of him, but Raya somehow recovered to deny him with an absolutely brilliant save.

Ramsdale was impressed with his teammate’s effort and applauded him from the sidelines shortly after. Carragher, however, was not entirely convinced that the applause was genuine and compared it to that of someone who has just lost an Oscar and politely celebrates the victory of his rival.

Shortly after the match, the former Liverpool player said: “He’s really devastated” and revealed he was laughing at the moment.

It wouldn’t be too shocking if he was too. He obviously wants Arsenal to win, but the more successful Raya is, the less chance he has of usurping her and getting back into the team. However, Ramsdale’s father was not happy.

What did Ramsdale’s father say to Carragher? Sky Sports decided to share a clip of Carragher talking about the goalkeeper and the applause while the rest of the show’s pundits laughed along with him, and it was enough to infuriate Ramsdale’s father.

He wasted no time in responding to the clip, criticizing the defender for his comments.
Reposting the video, Nick Ramsdale said:

“You’re a disgrace!! Show some class!! My son did this.” His emotions were clearly running high and he didn’t take kindly to the suggestion that his son’s reaction to Raya’s rescue was anything less than an honest show of support.

How does David Raya’s Premier League career compare to that of Aaron Ramsdale?

With Raya coming in to provide competition for Ramsdale and immediately taking his place in the starting line-up, it will be interesting to compare their Premier League careers to date.

Both stars now have plenty of experience in the top flight, with the Spaniard spending the majority of his time at Brentford, while the Englishman had stints with Bournemouth and Sheffield United before moving to the Emirates.

This season is Ramsdale’s fifth season in the Premier League and Raya’s third season in the top flight.

Both have bright futures ahead of them and it will be interesting to see who ends up becoming Arsenal’s full-time number one.
