The ‘This Is Anfield’ sign has been iconic and celebrated across European football since it was first installed by Bill Shankly nearly 50 years ago.
The statement supported one of Shankly’s most famous quotes: “It’s there to remind our boys who they play for and to remind the opposition who they play against!”The sign has been replaced three times over the years, but still retains its historic status today.
The last ten years alone have seen Liverpool win their 19th title, sixth European Cup, ninth League Cup, eighth FA Cup, fourth Super Cup and first Club World Cup.The current group of players ritually touches the backboard as they enter the field.
As it stands, however, six players have not yet earned the privilege of doing so.
In 2016, at the start of his Liverpool tenure, Klopp said: “I told my players not to touch the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign until they win something!“It’s a mark of respect.
I touched it when I was coach of Borussia Dortmund, but we lost 4-0.
If the rule continues to be enforced, summer signings Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch will not be allowed to touch the backboard.
Since the Reds failed to win silverware last season, January signing Cody Gakpo and youngster Stefan Bajcetic are also not allowed to touch the tunnel board.
