Man Utd’s summer signing was rejected by Premier League strugglers three days before deadline

Defender Sergio Reguilon, on loan from Manchester United, was rejected by a Premier League colleague ahead of his move to Old Trafford.

Reguilon was considered outdated at Tottenham under new manager Ange Postecoglou and was not named in the squad for any of the opening Premier League games this season.

United took the opportunity to sign the Spanish left-back on loan on deadline day after Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were injured.

Alvaro Fernández, meanwhile, took the opposite route and joined Granada on a temporary contract.

However, Reguilon has not played a Premier League match since April 2022 and had an unsuccessful loan spell at Atlético Madrid last season.

He is a fast and aggressive defender who is able to move forward and join opponents’ attacks. He was signed from Spurs by former United manager Jose Mourinho in 2020.

Questions have been raised about his defensive abilities, although Erik ten Hag’s side are bringing in a player who has some Champions League experience with Real Madrid.

Now it has emerged that another club have rejected the chance to sign Reguilon before the deadline.

Burnley operations director Matt Williams confirmed that the Clarets, useless in their first three games this season, had signed the 26-year-old “three or four days earlier” but rejected the deal.

He told BBC Radio Lancashire: “Left backs are a bit of a rarity. Look at Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in world football.

Luke Shaw is injured and they take a player from Tottenham who had been offered to us three or four days earlier.

“It was a business decision that we didn’t sign him – salaries, loan fees, etc. »

Burnley’s biggest problem, however, is that they ended the transfer window without signing a new left-back.

Their attempt to bring Ian Maatsen to the club from Chelsea failed. The Dutch defender has decided to stay at Stamford Bridge after the two clubs reached an agreement.

Burnley’s only natural left-back is Charlie Taylor, although he has not been named in the Premier League squad by manager Vincent Kompany this season.

United, meanwhile, managed to get a deal over the line and Reguilon was able to make his debut for Ten Hag’s side against Brighton on Saturday.
