MLB News: Four Former Dodgers Executives in Running to Replace Fired Ex-Dodgers Executive at Giants, Report Says

By Contributing Sports Writer

The San Francisco Giants are once again looking to tap into the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pool of front-office talent as they search for a new general manager to replace recently fired Farhan Zaidi. Zaidi, who served as the Dodgers’ GM under Andrew Friedman from 2015 to 2018, led the Giants as their president of baseball operations from 2019 until his dismissal in September 2024.

While Zaidi helped the Giants end the Dodgers’ division title streak in 2021, they fell short in the postseason, losing to their NL West rivals in the Division Series. This postseason failure, along with two consecutive losing seasons, ultimately cost him his job.

The Giants are now looking at several former Dodgers executives as potential replacements for Zaidi. According to a report by The San Francisco Chronicle, two of the top candidates for the general manager position are De Jon Watson and Logan White. Watson, a former Dodgers and Nationals director of player development, is currently serving as a special advisor with the Houston Astros. White, once the Dodgers’ scouting director, now holds a special advisory role with the San Diego Padres.

The Giants’ front office shake-up follows their disappointing 80-82 record in 2024, marking the second straight year they finished under .500. Despite the team’s lack of success in recent seasons, the new GM will inherit manager Bob Melvin, who recently joined the Giants after parting ways with the Padres. Melvin is familiar with both White and Billy Owens, another GM candidate who previously worked with him in Oakland.

Former Dodgers executives aren’t the only ones under consideration, as the Giants have also shown interest in longtime Oakland A’s executive Billy Owens. Notably, former Minnesota Twins GM Thad Levine and ex-Marlins GM Kim Ng are absent from the list of potential candidates.

The Giants have also discussed the possibility of bringing back former executives from their golden era of three World Series championships between 2010 and 2014. Bobby Evans, while not currently being considered for the GM role, could still receive an interview, while Brian Sabean, now with the New York Yankees, may be welcomed back in an advisory role.

The next GM will face the challenge of rebuilding a Giants team that has struggled to replicate its 2021 success. All eyes will be on how the Giants’ new leadership, influenced by past Dodgers connections, will shape the future of the franchise.
