Legendary SF Giants general manager announced plans to return back into the fold

San Francisco Giants Bring Buster Posey on Board as President of Baseball Operations, Opening Door for Brian Sabean’s Return

In a move that has thrilled fans, the San Francisco Giants have named Buster Posey as their new President of Baseball Operations. Posey, a Giants legend and key figure in their three World Series titles (2010, 2012, 2014), is set to take the helm of the front office, potentially bringing another familiar face back into the fold—former general manager Brian Sabean.

Sabean served as the Giants’ general manager from 1997 to 2014, playing a pivotal role in shaping the franchise’s success. His efforts helped build the teams that dominated the late 1990s and early 2000s, and he is widely credited for constructing the rosters that won three championships in five years. After the 2014 season, Sabean stepped back from day-to-day operations, assuming a more executive role while Bobby Evans took over. However, following Evans’ dismissal in 2018, Farhan Zaidi took charge, ushering in a new era that clashed with Sabean’s old-school methods.

Tension between Sabean and Zaidi became apparent as Sabean felt sidelined during Zaidi’s tenure. The former GM eventually left San Francisco, joining the New York Yankees as an advisor to their general manager, Brian Cashman. Sabean even admitted he no longer rooted for the Giants, expressing dissatisfaction with how Bruce Bochy’s exit as manager was handled—an exit he believed was forced by Zaidi.

Now, with Posey stepping into a leadership role, the winds of change are blowing through Oracle Park. Posey’s connection to Sabean remains strong, and during his introductory press conference, Posey confirmed that he had already reached out to his former mentor. The prospect of Sabean returning to the organization, potentially in an advisory capacity, could provide Posey with the guidance needed as he transitions into his new role.

If Posey brings Sabean back and partners with a skilled general manager to handle the day-to-day operations, it could set the Giants up for a return to the dominance they enjoyed during the Sabean era. Posey expressed excitement about returning to the team environment and the potential to restore the Giants to their former glory.

Sabean’s potential return, coupled with Posey’s leadership, marks a new chapter for the Giants—one steeped in their storied past but with an eye toward a bright future.
