San Francisco Giants in talk To Sign Former MVP in Offseason
Giants Eye Power at First Base: Paul Goldschmidt a Potential Target
The San Francisco Giants enter the offseason with several key areas to address, notably first base. While LaMonte Wade provided respectable production with a 121 OPS+, his eight home runs in 2024 highlight a need for a more powerful presence at the position.
Despite Wade’s contributions, the Giants are on the hunt for a slugger capable of hitting 25 or more home runs to bolster their lineup. With that in mind, Paul Goldschmidt could emerge as an intriguing option in free agency.
The former MVP had a disappointing season, posting just 22 home runs and a 98 OPS+, which is around league average. At 37 years old, Goldschmidt’s struggles this season raise concerns about his performance going forward. However, if he can be signed at a low price, the potential upside could be worth the risk.
Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report believes the Giants will actively pursue Goldschmidt, suggesting that the team could benefit from his experience and power in the middle of the order alongside players like Matt Chapman. “Goldschmidt recorded four-year lows in batting average, home runs, hits, and RBIs in 2024, so it makes sense why the Cardinals are okay with moving on. However, there are plenty of franchises that would still take on a 20-homer first baseman who has a career .289 batting average and .892 OPS,” Tansey noted.
While Tansey did not provide a specific contract prediction, a short-term deal—perhaps one or two years for a few million dollars—seems likely for the veteran slugger. The Giants have a pressing need for an everyday first baseman, and Goldschmidt’s track record could make him an attractive addition, should he return to form.
However, the Giants must weigh their options carefully. If Goldschmidt’s contract demands become too steep, they might choose to explore other avenues to address their first-base situation. As they look to climb back into contention in the National League West, the Giants will need to make strategic moves this offseason, starting with a power upgrade at first base.
