Brisbane Former Coach Michael Voss Announces Return to Lions, Stepping Down from Current Duties

Former Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss has officially announced his return to the club, stepping down from his current role as the head coach of Carlton Football Club. Voss, who had been serving as Carlton’s coach since 2022, revealed his decision in a press conference earlier today, citing personal and professional reasons for his departure and return to his beloved Lions.

Voss, a Brisbane Lions legend, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. During his tenure as captain, Voss led Brisbane to three consecutive AFL premierships from 2001 to 2003. After retiring as a player in 2006, he transitioned into coaching and first took charge of the Lions in 2009, where he remained for five seasons before being let go in 2013.

In his statement, Voss expressed his deep connection with Brisbane and his excitement to return to the club where he achieved much of his AFL success. “The Brisbane Lions have always been home to me, and I feel now is the right time to return,” Voss said. “It’s a place where I’ve experienced some of the best moments of my career, and the opportunity to come back is something I couldn’t pass up.”

Voss acknowledged that stepping down from his position at Carlton was not an easy decision, but he feels it is the best move for both clubs. “I’ve enjoyed my time with Carlton immensely, and I’m proud of the growth and resilience the team has shown. However, the opportunity with Brisbane aligns more closely with my long-term aspirations and personal journey,” he added.

Reports suggest that Brisbane made contact with Voss after their recent head coach vacancy, following the departure of Chris Fagan, who resigned for personal reasons. Voss will likely be tasked with rejuvenating a Brisbane squad that has been on the cusp of success in recent seasons but has struggled to secure a premiership since their last triumph in 2003.

Carlton Football Club has expressed its gratitude towards Voss for his efforts and leadership over the past two seasons. Carlton CEO Brian Cook issued a statement following Voss’ announcement, saying, “Michael has been a tremendous leader for our team, guiding us through a significant period of development. We respect his decision to return to Brisbane and wish him nothing but success in his future endeavours.”

Brisbane’s leadership group, led by club CEO Greg Swann, has welcomed Voss back with open arms. “Michael Voss embodies the values and spirit of this club,” Swann said. “His legacy here speaks for itself, and we’re thrilled to have him back to help guide us into the next chapter.”

The terms of Voss’ return to Brisbane are yet to be disclosed, but sources close to the Lions suggest that a long-term contract has been offered to the returning coach. Voss will be reuniting with several key players from his previous stint, as well as new emerging talent, as he seeks to build on the Lions’ competitive foundation.

Fans of both clubs have expressed mixed reactions to the news. Brisbane supporters are excited to see the return of their club hero, while Carlton fans are left wondering about the future direction of their club. The Blues are now in search of a new head coach, with speculation already swirling around potential candidates for the role.

Michael Voss is expected to officially take charge of the Brisbane Lions during the upcoming offseason, with preparations already underway for the 2025 AFL season.
