Oscar McInerney Effectively Ruled Out of Grand Final After Shoulder Injury in Brisbane’s Win Over Geelong

In devastating news for Brisbane, star ruckman Oscar McInerney has been all but ruled out of the 2024 AFL Grand Final after suffering a double shoulder dislocation during the Lions’ hard-fought 10-point victory over Geelong in the preliminary final. McInerney’s injury was part of a brutal night at the MCG, which also saw Geelong’s Max Holmes subbed out due to a hamstring concern.

Injury Drama for McInerney

The 204cm ruckman’s troubles began early in the match when he attempted a tackle on Cats midfielder Tom Atkins. McInerney immediately grabbed his left shoulder and was seen writhing in pain on the ground, forcing him to be taken off for medical evaluation. Despite being strapped up by Brisbane’s medical team, McInerney returned to the field after the first quarter break.

However, disaster struck again midway through the third quarter. McInerney, clearly in visible pain, clutched his shoulder and was subsequently subbed out for Conor McKenna. The ruckman was taken to the hospital shortly after. Brisbane’s coach, Chris Fagan, later confirmed that McInerney would miss the Grand Final, stating, “When you’ve double-dislocated your shoulder in a preliminary final, you’re not going to be playing in the Grand Final.”

Fagan added, “It’s a real pity. Oscar has been enormous for us, and we’re going to miss his presence. But we’ve got capable replacements ready to step up for the big occasion.”

Possible Replacements: Darcy Fort and Henry Smith in Line to Step Up

With McInerney all but ruled out, Brisbane is left with two primary options to replace their No. 1 ruckman. Emergency Darcy Fort, who hasn’t played a senior game since Round 7, is considered a leading candidate. Standing at 204cm, Fort has been solid in the reserves and could be called upon to counter Sydney’s ruck star Brodie Grundy in the Grand Final. Alternatively, four-gamer Henry Smith, standing 206cm, could also be given the nod as a fresh ruck option.

Fagan praised both Fort and Smith, stating that the team would carefully consider who to bring in. “We’ve got options with Darcy Fort and Henry Smith. Both are more than capable, and we’ve seen how crucial the ruck position can be, so it’s about making sure we get the right fit for the game.”

McInerney’s Impact on Brisbane and Emotional Response

McInerney’s loss is a major blow for Brisbane, given the pivotal role he has played throughout the season. Known for his heart and determination, McInerney pushed through the pain of the initial dislocation, hoping to help his side reach the decider.

Fagan acknowledged the emotional toll of losing such a key player but remained optimistic, saying, “Oscar is full of heart. He gives everything to the team, and I know the boys will play with that in mind. It’ll be a downer for us, but it’s something we can rally behind.”

Brisbane’s Grand Final Preparations

Despite the setback, the Lions are gearing up for their Grand Final clash against Sydney, with the team set to travel to Melbourne earlier than last year to allow for additional training sessions. Fagan confirmed the team would arrive in Melbourne by Wednesday to give them two training sessions before a captain’s run at the MCG on Friday. This would allow them to prepare adequately for the decider, despite the loss of McInerney.

In the meantime, Brisbane’s Lachie Neale is expected to follow a similar light training regime to last week, with Fagan confident in his side’s resilience. “I’m feeling very proud of the group for the resilience they’ve shown this season. If you had told me at the halfway mark of the year that we’d be in the Grand Final, I’d have thought you were crazy. But here we are.”

Geelong’s Injury Woes: Max Holmes Also Subbed Out

Geelong’s Max Holmes also faced injury struggles, having been subbed out in the third quarter due to a hamstring issue. Holmes, who received treatment during the quarter, returned briefly after three-quarter time but soon came off again, walking to the back of the bench in a sign of resignation. His availability for next season will be monitored.

Brisbane’s Resilience and Road Ahead

The Lions have shown incredible resilience to reach this point, overcoming a tough season that included a slow start and a challenging road to the finals. With McInerney out, Brisbane will need to rely on the strength and determination that got them this far, with key players like Joe Daniher and Charlie Cameron expected to step up and lead the charge.

The stage is set for an epic showdown at the MCG, and while Brisbane faces the heartbreak of losing McInerney, they are determined to find strength in adversity as they chase premiership glory.
