Reading FC manager Ruben Selles expressed his delight with his team after they handed Charlton Athletic their first defeat of the season. The Royals secured a 2-0 victory with goals from Charlie Savage and Sam Smith, lifting them to 8th place in the league as they head into the first international break of the campaign.
Reflecting on the match, Selles highlighted the contrast between this game and their previous encounter against Wigan. “It was a completely different game from the one against Wigan,” Selles said. “We adapted well and started fast. Almost the entire first half, we dominated and kept them in their half, except for the last action of the half where there were a couple of mistakes. That’s why we have Joel [Pereira], he saved us.”
Selles acknowledged that the team started slower in the second half, allowing Charlton to gain some momentum. However, Reading remained resilient, scoring twice to secure the win. “We managed to stay strong and then scored, scored another one, and then closed the game,” Selles added. “I’m very proud of the work and togetherness they are showing every time they play or train.”
Selles also commented on Reading’s new loan signing, Chem Campbell, who joined the team just before the transfer deadline. “Chem was our first option, a player who is very good in one-on-one situations, very dynamic, and can give us freshness,” Selles said. “He’s a different profile to what we’ve already got and has experience in League One with his loans to Wycombe and Charlton. He’s a very good character, a competitive character, and we need his help.”
Reading fans will be eager to see how Campbell integrates into the squad as the Royals aim to build on this strong start to the season.
