SEDONA, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) – A woman from Pennsylvania tragically passed away last Friday due to heat exhaustion while hiking with her family in Arizona’s Sedona area.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office reported that forest patrol received an emergency call from the Hi-Line Trail, near Highway 179, where a woman required urgent medical assistance.

The 44-year-old mother had been hiking with her husband and their two young daughters when she collapsed on the trail. A fellow hiker attempted to revive her by performing CPR until first responders arrived.

Despite the Sedona Fire Department’s efforts to continue life-saving measures, the woman could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an investigation, authorities concluded that the woman likely succumbed to heat exhaustion, which was not addressed in time to save her life. No foul play was suspected in her death.

Officials are urging hikers to exercise extreme caution when exploring the Red Rock desert during the summer months. They warn that temperatures can soar, particularly on trails with exposed rocks and minimal shade.

Arizona has been experiencing a prolonged heatwave this month, with temperatures frequently surpassing 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Cold, pale, and clammy skin
  • Fast, weak pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fainting

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to cool down quickly. Move to a cooler environment, loosen your clothing, sip water, or place wet cloths on your body. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist, worsen, or if vomiting occurs.
