Oklahoma’s DeMarco Murray Handed One-Game Suspension for Recruiting Violations

August 28, 2024

Norman, OK – Oklahoma football assistant coach DeMarco Murray has been handed a one-game suspension following recruiting violations related to improper contact with 17 prospects and their families. The NCAA’s decision comes after a lengthy investigation, with the penalties agreed upon by the university and the governing body.

The violations stem from interactions that were initially allowed under a COVID-19 exception, which expired in January 2023. The issue was discovered by Oklahoma in April 2023, and the university promptly self-reported the violation and implemented corrective actions.

As part of the agreed-upon sanctions, Murray will serve his suspension during Oklahoma’s first game of the season this Friday. Additionally, the Sooners will not be permitted to host unofficial recruit visits during the game, further limiting their engagement with potential future players.

Despite the violation, some Oklahoma fans and officials have expressed frustration with the timing of the NCAA’s decision, noting that the infractions were based on a rule that had recently changed and that the university had taken swift action to address the situation.

“We don’t allow this garbage in the SEC—lose the games you play, but lose them honestly. Come on, Norman!” one fan quipped, highlighting the light-hearted banter surrounding the incident.

Oklahoma’s season opener is set for this Friday night, coinciding with high school games where many recruits will be playing, making the suspension’s impact particularly poignant. The Sooners, however, remain focused on the upcoming season, eager to put this chapter behind them and compete at the highest level.
