New Abba Biography Reveals the Hidden Story Behind “Dancing Queen”

‘I cried when I heard it’: The story behind Abba’s immortal pop hit ‘Dancing Queen’

New book details the inspirations behind the song and the strong reactions it stirred from bandmembers

A forthcoming authorized biography of Abba, Melancholy Undercover by Jan Gradvall, provides an in-depth look at the making of the iconic song “Dancing Queen.” Scheduled for release this autumn, the book includes rare interviews with band members Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and Agnetha Fältskog, along with insights from those close to the group.

The biography explores the challenges Abba faced while creating their fourth studio album, Arrival, which Gradvall calls “their first true masterpiece.” Despite pressures from ongoing promotional tours, “Dancing Queen” was recorded in August 1975, marking the band’s first foray into disco.

Gradvall reveals that the song’s rhythm was inspired by George McCrae’s “Rock Your Baby” and the New Orleans beat from Dr. John’s Gumbo. Abba’s unique European twist on disco is highlighted, along with the working title “Boogaloo.” The book recounts how the members realized they had created something special, leading to “Dancing Queen” becoming a global hit after its release in 1976.

The biography, set for release on October 10, 2024, offers fans a rare glimpse into the band’s creative process and the lasting impact of one of pop music’s greatest hits.
