3 former Toronto Maple Leafs who could return on a PTO
Leafs GM Brad Treliving Admits Team is “Not Set Yet” as Training Camp Nears..
With training camp fast approaching, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has made it clear that the team is still a work in progress. Despite Mitch Marner’s inclusion in Auston Matthews’ captaincy introduction, signaling his spot on the roster for the 2024-25 season, the Leafs still have areas to address if they want to be serious Stanley Cup contenders.
The team needs to replace Tyler Bertuzzi, resolve the situation with Nick Robertson, and clarify Mitch Marner’s status to avoid any distractions as he approaches potential free agency. Additionally, the Leafs need a reliable third-line center, as Pontus Holmberg isn’t likely to fill that role, and moving Marner to center doesn’t seem to be in the plans.
Ideally, the Leafs would conclude the summer by signing Marner and trading for a center to support Matthews and Tavares. While they have some salary cap flexibility, they’re still spending over $7 million on players like Ryan Reaves, Calle Jarnkrok, Connor Timmins, and David Kampf—money that could be better allocated, especially with promising players like Steeves, Cowan, and Minten potentially on the roster.
Treliving’s recent comments on TSN’s Overdrive suggest that he is still looking to make moves, and a Professional Tryout (PTO) could be a practical first step. While a major trade might not be imminent, the Leafs could promote from within and look for additional help closer to the trade deadline. In the meantime, a PTO could provide the short-term solution they need, and former Leafs players could be among those considered for a return.
