Canadian tennis sensation Leylah Fernandez has shared a unique piece of advice she received from her coaching staff during her impressive victory over Elena Rybakina at the Cincinnati Open. The 21-year-old, who gained prominence after reaching the US Open final in 2021 at just 18, delivered a standout performance in the third round, defeating the world number four in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

In an interview with the Tennis Channel post-match, Fernandez revealed that her coach and support team advised her with a humorous but crucial remark:

“She’s probably a little bit taller than you. A little bit stronger than you. Stop being dumb and just put the ball in.” Fernandez also praised Rybakina for her remarkable skills and quick, powerful play, noting that it was inspiring. She focused on staying patient and consistently getting the ball back into play.

Fernandez is now preparing to face Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals. Pegula, who defeated Taylor Townsend in the round of 16 with a score of 6-2, 6-3, will be the second opponent Fernandez has faced in professional tennis. Their previous encounter was at the Miami Open earlier this year, where Pegula won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
