According to an insider, the New York Knicks might be without two key players at the beginning of training camp.

The New York Knicks’ shortage of frontcourt depth is expected to become apparent during training camp, with Julius Randle (shoulder) and Mitchell Robinson (ankle) still recovering from their respective injuries.

This insight comes from SNY’s Ian Begley, who addressed Knicks-related questions in his recent mailbag article.

Begley noted that Randle had shoulder surgery in early April, and based on typical recovery times for such procedures, it would be surprising if Randle is ready for the start of training camp. However, if his recovery proceeds as planned, he should be available for the Knicks’ season opener on October 22 or shortly after.

Regarding Robinson, who had surgery in mid-May to address a stress injury in his left ankle, Begley reported that as of earlier this week, Robinson had not been cleared for high-intensity weight-bearing activities. Therefore, he still has several milestones to reach before he can fully participate in training camp.

On a more positive note, Begley expressed optimism about Jalen Brunson, the new team captain. Brunson, who underwent surgery in mid-May to repair a broken left hand, seems to be ahead of schedule in his recovery. During his captaincy celebration last week, he showed no visible issues with his hand. Begley speculated that Brunson would likely be a full participant in training camp given the positive progress of his rehab.
