Brad Treliving has been the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs for just over a year. During this time, he has made numerous moves to enhance the Leafs’ roster. Some of these decisions have been successful, while others have not panned out as well.
Last season, the Maple Leafs had a solid team, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2024 NHL playoffs. This prompted Treliving to reassess and identify areas that needed improvement.
No general manager gets every decision right. Not all trades or free-agent signings will work as intended. A GM must adapt and try new approaches when a move fails.
In his first off-season as the Leafs’ GM, Treliving brought in grit and tenacity by signing Ryan Reaves, Max Domi, and Tyler Bertuzzi.
This off-season, he focused on strengthening the defense by signing Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Jani Hakanpaa, and re-signing Timothy Liljegren and Simon Benoit.
The main question now is whether this improved defense can compensate for the Leafs’ lack of a clear number-one starting goaltender. While the tandem of Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz shows potential, their lack of experience is a concern.
